One Year A Level
Ashbourne’s one year A Level course covers the entire AS and A2 syllabuses in 31 weeks of teaching from September to June. Although each subject is taught slightly differently, students should usually expect to take examinations in both the winter and summer examination sessions. For Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, students are taught in separate groups, receiving 8 hours per subject per week (hours will reduce to 6 if fewer than 3 students are in the group). In other subjects, students will join the upper sixth classes, to cover A2 content, as well as having additional time to cover AS material, which may involve joining the AS resit class (2 hours per week) and/or additional tuition specifically tailored for one year candidates (1/2 hours per week). Note that arrangements are slightly different for students taking Art subjects.

Group sizes rarely exceed ten. Small classes provide a stimulating interactive environment. Students are able to clarify points by discussion with each other as well as with the teacher. Each student will have a personal tutor, who is responsible to guide the student through his or her university application.

Not a retake Course

Ashbourne’s one year programme is not targeted towards resit students. It is a programme that covers both AS and A2 material for the new specifications, and does not require any previous knowledge of the A level syllabus.

Demanding

The one-year A Level programme is a very demanding course. We would not recommend this course to students that struggle academically. Essentially students are studying a 6 term course in 3 terms. History suggests that less academically able candidates really struggle over the one-year A level programme.

Who is suitable for this course?

Our one-year courses are suitable for students in a variety of situations.

Old specification students

Students who have completed their A level courses, old specification, in summer 2009, may have received examination results that are not high enough to allow them to be accepted onto their desired university programme. These students have the opportunity to retake these old specification units in the winter session, January 2010, but unfortunately are not permitted to resit examinations for the summer 2010 session. Therefore, the one year A Level course may be an option.

Overseas Students

A number of overseas students, who have already completed their high school education in their own country, may wish to take this programme.

Change in Career Focus

A number of students that have already completed their A level education in the UK, may wish to adopt a different career path, and so may require extra (or new) A levels. This is quite common for students wishing to study Medicine.
