  1. The Appointed Person/Person in Charge

This person must:

  3. ensure that the college has immediate access to medical attention such as doctors and ambulances.
  4. Be trained in

Coping with emergencies

It should be noted that the person in charge need not have a formal certificate in first aid but must be trained as noted above. It is a matter of judgement whether the college trains any staff (which should be voluntary) in first aid.

A leaflet for general advice
20 individually wrapped sterile dressings

  1. Staff

Staff are not formally required to be trained in first aid but are expected to use their best endeavours in the event of an incident or emergency.

  1. Employer

The college has a general responsibility which is vested in its principal to implement first aid policy. This includes:

  1. arranging for training
  2. providing adequate equipment
  3. reviewing procedures, policies and implementation once per year
  4. inform staff of first aid procedures
  5. display notices for the above

  1. Hygiene

The person in charge and first aiders and others should be aware of the danger of communicable diseases such as HIV/Aids and Hepatitis B. Thus in dealing with wounds or injuries involving blood or extruded bodily fluids, great care should be taken; in particular, surgical gloves should be worn before treatment.

  1. The First Aid Room

Either of the offices of the Principal or Director of Studies may be used to isolate victims of accidents.

  1. Reporting Accidents

All reportable injuries must be recorded in the college accident book. Reports should include: date, time, place, persons involved, a brief description of the accident and what ensued.

Reportable accidents include: death and injuries preventing victims participating in their college activities for more than 3 days.

All reportable accidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
