To support our commitment to Health and Safety, the college conforms to statutory requirements for first aid. This includes:
A Person in Charge of First Aid – Fabio Carpene
The provision of first aid information to all employees
The training of ‘first-aiders’ – Mike Kirby, Lee Kirby, John Wilson, Fabio Carpene
An audit for risks which is reviewed each year (Risk Assessment).
The Appointed Person/Person in Charge
This person must:
take charge in emergencies
maintain the first aid boxes
ensure that the college has immediate access to medical attention such as doctors and ambulances.
Be trained in
Coping with emergencies
Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
Dealing with unconsciousness
Dealing with wounds and bleeding
It should be noted that the person in charge need not have a formal certificate in first aid but must be trained as noted above. It is a matter of judgement whether the college trains any staff (which should be voluntary) in first aid.
First Aid Box
Should contain:
A leaflet for general advice
20 individually wrapped sterile dressings
2 sterile eye pads
4 individually wrapped triangular bandages
6 safety pins
6 medium individually wrapped sterile unmedicated wound dressing
1 pair disposable gloves
Staff
Staff are not formally required to be trained in first aid but are expected to use their best endeavours in the event of an incident or emergency.
Employer
The college has a general responsibility which is vested in its principal to implement first aid policy. This includes:
arranging for training
providing adequate equipment
reviewing procedures, policies and implementation once per year
inform staff of first aid procedures
display notices for the above
induct new staff in first aid procedures
be aware of special medical considerations among staff and students
log all incidents, accidents and emergencies
ensure provision over lunch breaks
provide for absences
provide for art, science and photography facilities
Hygiene
The person in charge and first aiders and others should be aware of the danger of communicable diseases such as HIV/Aids and Hepatitis B. Thus in dealing with wounds or injuries involving blood or extruded bodily fluids, great care should be taken; in particular, surgical gloves should be worn before treatment.
The First Aid Room
Either of the offices of the Principal or Director of Studies may be used to isolate victims of accidents.
Reporting Accidents
All reportable injuries must be recorded in the college accident book. Reports should include: date, time, place, persons involved, a brief description of the accident and what ensued.
Reportable accidents include: death and injuries preventing victims participating in their college activities for more than 3 days.
All reportable accidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
