AS LEVELS AT ASHBOURNE |
The basic structure of A levels involves 2 years of study before university where students will normally spend 3 years. Students may choose 4 subjects in year one (AS level), usually followed by 3 of these 4 subjects in year 2 (A2 level). The aggregate of results of their exams at the end of year 1 (AS level) and year 2 (A2 level) produce the A level qualification.
One of the benefits of private (independent) sixth (6th) form colleges is their almost exclusive focus on one and two year A level courses. Students will not only experience a much more grown up approach to education, which offers an outstanding preparation for university. |
CHOICE
This system is unique in the world because it offers students choice (Ashbourne offers more than 30 different subjects) and focus (in particular to discard subjects in which they are not sincerely interested) at the same time.
There are no compulsory subjects at A level; in fact few university degrees require students to study any particular subject at either AS or A2 level. Obvious exceptions are Medicine, which requires Chemistry and Biology, and Engineering, which requires Maths, usually Physics and recommends Further Mathematics. If in doubt you may either talk to the Admissions department of relevant universities or arrange a meeting or telephone call to Ashbourne. |
ASHBOURNE’S ADVANTAGE
The ability to choose without restriction up to 2 months before the commencement of their AS course provides a compelling reason for students to choose Ashbourne. In fact, we are happy to offer courses to full time students even if there are only one or two students in a class.
