Ashbourne European Trip 2010: Athens

Wednesday 17th February

This was our excursion day! We all woke up very early and caught the metro to the harbour, Piraeus. We then rushed to catch a ferry across to the island of Hydra. As soon as we got onto the ferry, everyone was immediately asleep and we had a very quiet hour and a half journey!

We arrived at Hydra with the sun shining. We decided to split into three groups with most of the students choosing to catch a water ferry around the island to the beach. We arrived at the beach expecting golden sands and shops to buy lunch and swimwear, but the whole place was deserted except for a rocky beach and two old men chatting!

With gorgeous weather however, we enjoyed a good time in the sea for an hour or so whilst others relaxed on the beach listening to music and chatting. On returning to the mainland in the afternoon, we had lunch and then took a ferry back to Piraeus.

One of the favourite meals of our trip was spent in a restaurant in Piraeus, which had a beautiful view over the water and very good food.
