Go Karting

One of the most “thrilling” activities of 2009, organised by Emily Boothroyd (again! What a star!) with able assistance from Gino Moodley, took place at the Streatham Karting Circuit. Twenty-five students, along with three members of staff, took part in this spectacular “go-karting” racing night. The venue was specifically chosen due to its well-equipped facilities, as well as meeting all of Ashbourne safety standards.

The participants were gathered together in the middle of the circuit for a safety briefing before the event, where they heard instructions on how to control the kart and were made aware of important signs and flags that the safety officers would use during the race. All participants were provided with go-karting clothing, helmets and gloves. To ensure safety, bumping was banned and a special format was designed for the event.

The participants were split into 3 groups and the top 2 drivers with the “fastest lap“ times would qualify for the final race. All those in attendance experienced nervousness, thrills and excitement on this thoroughly enjoyable occasion. An attitude of fair play from all those involved was also a key factor that led to a successful evening. In the end, it was Oleg who rocked the whole circuit with his skillful driving and amazing speed. The top three winners were awarded trophies, with the aid of some explosive “fake” champagne from some Coke bottles. Congratulations to Minh Hung and Esmaeil, who completed the podium places.

The night ended with three rounds of applause; one for the attendees for the mature attitude shown, one for Emily for her fantastic organisational skills and a final one was reserved for the great efforts of all the members of the Karting Circuit staff who had made the experience safe and thoroughly enjoyable.
