Subjects and Courses
A LEVEL COURSES
It is possible to take A levels over either the usual two years, or as an intensive one year course. Two year students receive at least six hours tuition per subject per week in both the lower sixth and upper sixth years. One year students receive at least six hours tuition per subject per week.

Students who have completed the lower sixth year elsewhere may transfer to Ashbourne to complete their sixth form studies. It is usually possible for students to transfer their existing results to the examination board that Ashbourne offers.

We also offer short retake A level courses running either from September to January (where January examinations in that subject are available) or from January to June. Short retake students receive six hours tuition per subject per week.

Additional tuition is offered as part of the course for science practical examinations and for coursework completion where applicable.

GCSE
At GCSE we offer either the standard two year course or an intensive one year course. On both courses students receive four hours tuition per subject per week. The one year programme assumes no previous knowledge of any subject.

We also offer short retake courses at GCSE. Students may combine a short retake GCSE course with the first year of their A level programme.

GCSE students follow a programme based on the British National Curriculum, including a course in Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). They enjoy an exciting programme of extra-curricular activities, including sports and visits to the theatre, the cinema and London’s many museums.

Full advice is offered to GCSE students about their choice of A level subjects through a programme of internal workshops.

Some students may join Ashbourne at the age of thirteen (National Curriculum Year 9) to follow a preparatory programme that will lead to GCSE study through the normal or accelerated routes.

All students under the age of 16 are supervised until 4pm each day and the vast majority of GCSE lessons are timetabled to end by 4pm. Ashbourne provides a supportive environment in which students may complete homework and coursework when they are not in lessons, as well as receiving additional assistance from their tutors.
