Student Feedback
"Students are enthusiastic about the college with one commenting: 'teaching is amazing...they make it all really interesting and we are treated as young adults'." - Ashbourne College Ofsted Report 2010
Katharine Lea-Robbins
Media Studies, English Language, Drama, Religious Studies

"I can't thank the teachers enough for helping me achieve my grades. I have made many lifelong friends here at Ashbourne and love the relaxed atmosphere. The small classes and intense exam revision all help you feel confident that you will succeed."
Calum Witney
Drama, German, English Language

"When I first joined Ashbourne College in January, I arrived from a school with a very traditional background (in fact it was founded by Henry VIII) which I found to be a little archaic. Ashbourne was a breath of fresh air for me. I found that I worked harder and, whilst Ashbourne's teachers were always demanding, they allowed for self-motivation. In my experience I am less inclined to do something with the crack of a slaver's whip behind me. That said, Ashbourne expects its students to work hard, and the atmosphere at the college encourages work and study. Intertwined with this is a deep and friendly rapport with the teaching staff that I believe could not be compared to any college in the country. It is safe to say that Ashbourne is a superb college with fantastically dedicated staff who are only too happy to sit down with you and talk about any of your interests or concerns."
Susana Figueira
Drama, English Literature, Philosophy, Spanish

"I was really pleased with my results, as I'd never felt confident in my abilities, despite the constant encouragement from all of my teachers. In all honesty, the quality of teaching at Ashbourne is to such a high standard and the support from the staff (along with personal hard work!) ensures that you reach your full potential. The passion with which the teachers teach their subjects makes the whole experience all the more worthwhile."

Vy Van

Vy Van is a former Ashbourne student who studied at the college between 2002 and 2003.

He achieved excellent academic results having studied A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Biology and proceeded on to Imperial College London to study Mathematics. He has since completed his degree and moved to America, where he has been instrumental in helping to transform The Sam Houston High School for Science, Math, and Technology from a failing institution to one of excellence, a turnaround that has been of great local interest

The school was well below national academic standards and Vy was faced with an extraordinary challenge in bringing his Maths students up to a reasonable level. He inherited a group of students who had a 30% pass rate in Maths; some of whom, he recalls ‘were still counting on their fingers’; he used a variety of innovative teaching methods and made up songs to help the students learn complicated mathematical formulae.

He became very close to his students by encouraging them to believe in themselves and raising their self-confidence. He invited them to regularly write their dreams on his whiteboard as a way of bringing out their ambitions. In 2009, his students came out with an 86% success rate in Algebra.

Vy remains in contact with staff at Ashbourne and the college is equally keen to follow his remarkable development into an inspirational figure.
