DISABILITIES POLICY

BACKGROUND

In the 25 years of its establishment, the college has had few disabled clients but has always behaved responsibly, liberally and generously in welcoming such clients, students or suppliers. It is fortunate to have lifts for those in wheelchairs in both of its buildings and plans to install a disabled toilet in its main premises.

DISABILITY AND DISCRIMINATION

Employees and Potential Employees

The college obeys the law set down by the Disability and Discrimination Act of 2002. With reference to the law, it neither discriminates against, nor harasses, persons who have disabilities and are either current or potential employees of the college.

This means it will not violate the dignity of any employee nor create intimidating or hostile circumstances of employment for any employee.

It will offer equal opportunities to all with regard to promotion, benefits and terms of employment and will not refuse to employ or offer to employ anyone for reasons of disability.

It recognizes its responsibilities to reasonably provide access to and alterations of the premises it uses to facilitate the use of the college by any disabled person.

Any advertisements it employs will not discriminate against disabled persons nor will any pressure be brought to bear on any employee to discriminate against the disabled.

It will be sensitive to the needs of the disabled with regar to absences for treatment, training arrangements, hours of work and the use of equipment.

Students

The college’s admission’s policy reflects its commitment to equal opportunities; it will neither refuse admission, refuse to accept an application nor alter its terms of admission for students who are disabled.

In a similar way it will not unreasonably disadvantage disabled students from any activities associated with the operation of the college.

Accessibility

The college reviews its access strategy annually and has plans to modify one of its toilets to provide for disabled students, staff and guests.

The college has always relied on the goodwill of staff and students to assist with any difficulties such clients might experience because of their disability.

The college aims to treat all associated with it fairly and equally.

Career progress is based on merit.

Staff and students should be encouraged to be sensitive to the needs of all, including the disabled, and provide such basic assistance as opening doors for those confined to wheelchairs.

The college should provide information about schemes for those with disabilities and about diversity and equality in general. (www.advice-resources.co.uk )

Staff, students and parents are encouraged to involve themselves in all aspects of school policy, included disability.

All policies, including disability, are reviewed once per year.

Ultimately all policies are the responsibility of the Principal.
