Drama at Ashbourne has grown into one of the college’s most successful and exciting departments. Headed by James Wykes, Ashbourne offers the AQA A Level, which covers both theoretical and practical aspects of Drama and gives students a good balance between physical performance and academic written work. Importantly, drama students at Ashbourne will see up to 15 productions in a single year at some of London’s outstanding theatre venues.
The drama and theatre A level is ideal for students who are interested in dramatic production and performance. It presents exciting opportunities to enhance and develop confidence, leadership and teamwork as well as strengthening critical and creative skills. Drama and theatre studies explores the development of understanding of ideas, the past, psychology and character, myths and stories and the individual and society through the medium of the stage, scripting and live performance.
For over 10 years Ashbourne has produced an annual Revue incorporating Dance, Drama, Music and Fashion. The Revue provides an excellent occasion for Drama students to put their creative skills to the test and work alongside other departments in producing an entertaining and memorable night. The college’s commitment to Drama extends beyond academic concerns through its thriving Drama Club, which is open to all students.
Ashbourne aims to open new vistas both in practical terms and in theoretical appreciation, covering a broad spectrum from Greek Tragedy to The Theatre of the Absurd.
Each year, Ashbourne is able to offer enthusiastic, committed and dedicated students of Drama scholarships for a two-year period. The scholarships range from 25% to 100% of tuition fees but excludes examination fees and other incidentals. Naturally this is an exceptional offer, so we expect the quality of students to be commensurate with the awards offered. Our admissions policy is outlined in the prospectus; however, we do not accept students that do not have at least five good GCSEs, as a minimum, and prefer at least a B grade average. Students that wish to be considered for scholarships should be on course for straight A*/As in their subjects; however, as indicated above, we are particularly interested in admitting enthusiastic and gifted students, so your afternoon with us is of particular importance.
We recommend that all students take four AS levels in Year 12 and continue with three of them in Year 13, so that they achieve three solid A levels in their chosen subjects. There is much flexibility at Ashbourne, something we like to encourage, and it is possible, therefore, to take a broader range of subjects should you wish so to do. There are a plethora to choose from including Art and Design to Psychology, French to Film Studies, Photography to Philosophy. For more detail look under ‘Courses’ in the main menu bar or request a prospectus. .
Ashbourne takes Drama and Theatre Studies very seriously and so holds auditions for places. The purpose of the audition is two-fold:
- To ensure the quality of the students on the programme
- To offer scholarships to candidates with exceptional academic ability and acting talent.
