A Level Sociology
Aims
For each student to cover the core topics of the main examining boards.
To teach and test knowledge, concepts, application, evaluation and interpretation. These are all core skills the examiners in any board are looking to reward.
To apply previously learnt and newly acquired information and skills to past examination questions
To support and improve students’ study skills, revision technique and examination strategy and performance.
Course Design
The course is designed for the Associated Examining Board (the AQA) specification at both AS and A2 but contains topics common to the core syllabus of other major boards.
The course emphasises the following: key facts and concepts; key institutions and their functioning in contemporary society; the application of evidence, facts, case studies and sociological research and methods to all types of examination question, including source based stimulus response questions or essays.
Daily Programme
This is followed by a general synopsis of the aims and objectives of the day ahead, a summary of the key facts and concepts, reference to past examination questions of all types and particular focus on techniques for revising the subject material in a focused, disciplined and effective manner. Students will receive a modest amount of homework and a reading assignment for the following morning’s test.
Final Session
Students will be given a formal examination to conclude the week’s programme and will be given assistance in drawing up a detailed, realistic and effective revision schedule to take them through to the examination. A report will be written. Progress made throughout the week is identified as are further improvements which should be made to enhance the prospects of examination success.

General and Conceptual, Major Sociological Theories and Sociological Research methods (Introduction), Quantitative Research Methods and Qualitative Research methods.
Sociology of the Family
Industrialisation, Urbanisation and Changing Family Structures, Contemporary Diversity in Family Structures, The Domestic Division of Labour Debates.
The Sociology of Education
Sociological approaches to Education, Differential attainment by class, gender, ethnicity and other sociological explanations. The New Vocationalism.
AS Individual Option Choices
A2 Level
Health, Mass Media
Accelerated Revision
Power, Politics and Religion
Students will be able to select any specific options they wish to have covered and obtain guidance as to how to prepare for these options. (Units 4, 5 & 6)
