Hostels have many benefits in terms of comfort and proximity to the college, and are perfect for sensible, independent students. Hostels are a good way for students to make new friends within a safe environment. In hostels such as Lee Abbey and Queen Alexandra, students will find themselves in a thriving community with a handful of fellow Ashbourne students.
Queen Alexandra and Lee Abbey, listed below, are only a fifteen minute walk to college. There are other hostels which are a further distance from college. Hyelm House in Hampstead for example requires a longer commute on the tube or bus.
Different hostels provide different options for students. Some hostels will be girl's only (there are not many boys only hostels in London) and there are also mixed over 18's hostels. Most hostels offer a choice between a single and shared room (usually a twin room but up to a dormitory of 4 people at some hostels) and between ensuite and shared bathroom facilities. There is also sometimes the choice between catered and self catered hostels, or meal options (for example bed and breakfast only, half board, or full board). At catered halls meals are included in the price, but obviously at self-catered hostels you would have to buy (and cook!) your own food. Laundry and cleaning services generally depend on the hostel. Cleaning services are usually free, with the use of the laundry for a small fee, for example £1.50 a large load. These do differ per hostel though.
Most hostels have lounges, TV facilities, computer and study rooms, and occasionally music facilities such as practice rooms. These are the standard entertainment facilities, although some have additional facilities including garden space, pool tables, themed entertainment evenings, and other social events. At most hostels wireless internet is available. Sometimes this is available only in certain areas of the hostel, and sometimes there is an extra charge, but this is usually quite low
Accommodation must be arranged with hostels directly by parents or students who must make adequate checks to ensure they are satisfied with the standard of accommodation provided. Ashbourne does not inspect the hostels and does not make any guarantee as to the standard or safety of the premises listed. However we have received no complaints about the hostels we have listed and feedback has generally been very positive. |
