Ashbourne’s Geography students take a trip to Lake District

Our Year 12 Geography students went to the Lake District to stay at the Blencathra Field Study Centre to carry out investigations for their individual coursework projects and other fieldwork connected with the course. The centre offers stunning views over the mountains as well as amazing food. This was an opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom and to escape the hustle and bustle of city life for a week.
Students investigating physical geography analysed coastal processes at Silloth on the Solway Firth (a grey and windy coast luckily blessed with a cosy traditional fish & chips shop!), looking into different factors in the water and carbon cycles.
As for the students investigating human geography, they looked into the influences that are changing Keswick, as part of their Changing Places unit of the course. Although it is not part of the syllabus, there was some serious investigation into the best scones on offer in the (many) tea shops in Keswick!
Well done to the students who worked hard, even though classes ran to 8pm in the evening!
The fieldwork is invaluable in bringing alive the theory they learn in the classroom. Now they have to write a 3,000 word essay on their investigation.
