Last season saw the Ashbourne Allstars miss the top of the league by just ONE point, much to the dismay of coaches Fabio and Steve. But the new year seems to have brought a new lease of life to the team, who opened the new season with a 5-3 win against CATS College.
Here’s an account of the game from coach Fabio:
Charlie – Goalkeeper
Illya – Defender
Ali – Defender
Barry – Midfield
Antonio – Midfield
Alex – Midfield
Michael – Midfield
Djordje – Striker
In what was our first game back after the Christmas break, the Allstars started the new season off with a fixture against CATS College.
The game started off with both teams playing very nervously and neither team really taking control of the game, however after 10 mins the Allstars started to impose themselves on the game.
It was during this spell that CATS College took the lead against the run of play after a mix up in defence which allowed their striker to score from what seemed like an impossible angle.
Ashbourne equalised soon after through Djordje after a great passing move involving Michael and Antonio. 1-1
1-1 soon became 2-1 with Djordje getting his second of the night with a neat finish.
CATS College equalised just before half time. With the Allstars getting tired after an energetic first half both defensively and in attack, CATS took advantage with a breakaway goal to make it 2-2 at the break.
At half time Steve and I stressed that we had to keep working hard off the ball to win the game as CATS College had a very good forward line that were very dangerous. We had to stick together and get the win.
The Allstars kicked off for the second half and dominated from the word go. The back line of Charlie in goal, Ali and Illya in defence and the holding midfielder, Barry, dominating and thwarting any attack that CATS posed against us.
The Allstars took the lead again through Antonio, who hit a shot that their keeper just couldnt keep out after some tenacious battling to win the ball back by Alex Macdonald.
It looked like the Allstars would run away with it now, but a promising Allstars attack turned into a goal for CATS College after a 4 v 2 counter attack which Ali and Illya almost thwarted, but somehow a left foot strike from their impressive number 10 found the back of the net.
The Allstars were tiring now and it seemed like the game was destined for a draw, but Djordje completed his hat-trick to make it 4-3 with another cool finish.
4-3 quickly became 5-3 as CATS College seemed to capitulate very quickly, with Antonio getting his fifth of the night and finishing with 2 goals and 3 assists with a Man of the Match display.
It was a rusty performance by the Allstars but there were great passages of quality football played on the night which, if we build on, can lead us to win the title.
The Allstars play Duff Miller next Tuesday at Westway Sports Centre, kick Off at 6:10pm
