The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a new assessment being introduced for students applying to university for 2026 entry. It is designed to test how well applicants can think critically, solve problems, and write clearly, skills that are essential for success in higher education.
Unlike traditional subject-based exams, the TARA focuses on general academic reasoning. It doesn’t assess subject knowledge, but instead looks at a student’s ability to analyse information, construct logical arguments, and express ideas clearly in writing. It includes both reasoning tasks and an essay component, completed under timed conditions.
The test will be delivered digitally through Pearson VUE, with two testing windows available: October 2025 and January 2026. Students only need to sit the test once, but planning and preparation are essential, especially as the TARA will form a key part of the admissions process for certain degree courses.
The introduction of the TARA reflects a growing emphasis on assessing students’ academic potential through skills-based testing. It provides an opportunity for students to stand out for their intellectual abilities, beyond predicted grades and personal statements.
At Ashbourne College, we offer dedicated support for students preparing for university admissions tests like the TARA. Our application support programme includes expert coaching, mock assessments, and personalised feedback to help each student perform at their best.
If your child will be applying to university in 2026 and needs to sit the TARA test, we’d be happy to guide them through the preparation process. You can contact us to find out more about how we can help.
