In February 2025, students from Ashbourne College’s Model United Nations (MUN) club took part in the annual CIFE MUN conference, hosted at CATS Cambridge. This prestigious event brings together students from across the CIFE group of independent sixth form colleges, offering a unique opportunity to engage with international issues through structured debate and diplomacy.
A Transformative Educational Experience
Ashbourne’s delegation consisted of six students, each representing a different country across various United Nations committees. In preparation for the conference, students conducted in-depth research on their assigned nation’s policies and submitted formal position papers. During the event, they engaged in debate, negotiated with fellow delegates, and collaborated on resolutions addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
The experience allowed students to develop valuable academic and personal skills, including critical thinking, public speaking, teamwork, and global awareness. It also encouraged confidence and independence, qualities that are essential for success at university and beyond.
Award-Winning Student Achievement
Four out of Ashbourne’s six delegates received individual awards at the conference. These included Best Delegate, Best Position Paper, and Outstanding Position Paper, accolades that recognise the students’ thoughtful preparation, articulate contributions, and strong engagement throughout the event.
These results reflect not only the high calibre of the students involved but also Ashbourne’s commitment to nurturing intellectual curiosity and academic ambition.
Enrichment That Supports Growth Beyond the Classroom
Participation in the Model United Nations club is one of many ways Ashbourne encourages students to explore subjects beyond their A-level studies. Open to all year groups, the club offers a welcoming environment where students can build their skills in communication, research, negotiation, and leadership.
As part of the CIFE group, Ashbourne students benefit from opportunities like the CATS Cambridge conference, experiences that deepen learning, build confidence, and help prepare students for future academic and professional environments.
Looking Ahead
Ashbourne’s strong performance at the CIFE MUN conference highlights the value of co-curricular learning as part of a well-rounded education. We are proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to supporting even more young delegates as they represent the college at future events.
