Get Ready for Uni! - A Transition Guide and Checklist for Year 13 Leavers

You’ve finished your A-levels, the stress of exams is behind you, and university life is just around the corner. This summer is your chance to celebrate, but it’s also the perfect time to get organised so you can start your new chapter with confidence.

Whether you’re moving across the country or commuting from home, there’s plenty to sort out, from student finance to registering with a new GP. This guide will take you through everything you should do before Freshers’ Week, so nothing catches you off guard.

Confirm Your Place
On Results Day, UCAS Hub will confirm your place if you’ve met your offer. If not, you may need to explore Clearing to secure a course. Double-check any requirements from your university, such as sending proof of qualifications or English language certificates if needed.

If you haven’t already, respond to your accommodation offer and pay any deposits to secure your place in halls or private housing.

Get Your Student Finance Sorted
If you haven’t yet applied for Student Finance, whether in England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, do it as soon as possible to avoid delays to your first payment. Open a student bank account with perks such as a railcard or an interest-free overdraft, and keep an eye on your Student Finance portal for updates and confirmation letters.

Organise Your Accommodation
Accept your offer from the university or landlord, then read your tenancy contract carefully. Make a note of the tenancy length, payment schedule, and deposit rules. Arrange your rent instalment payments in advance and set reminders so you never miss a deadline. Check your move-in date and whether you’ll need to book a specific time slot to collect your keys.

Take Care of Health and Wellbeing
If you’re moving away from home, register with a GP near your new address as soon as possible, you’ll need this for prescriptions and general healthcare. Transfer your NHS records and check your vaccinations, particularly MMR and MenACWY, which are important for students in shared accommodation. If you take regular medication, make sure you get a repeat prescription before you move.

Prepare Academically
Get hold of your course reading list and order books early, looking for second-hand or eBook versions to save money. Check if your university provides free or discounted access to essential software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, or subject-specific programs. Stock up on stationery and study supplies now to avoid the rush in September.

Set Up Your Digital Access
Make sure you know your university email login and check it regularly. Complete any online student registration before arrival and explore your course portal, whether that’s Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas, for pre-arrival tasks or timetables. Save important contacts such as your academic adviser, accommodation office, finance office, and IT helpdesk. Pay close attention to induction emails from both your university and your department.

Manage Your Money
Draw up a budget for rent, bills, food, travel, and social activities. Find out your student loan payment dates and pace your spending accordingly. Download budgeting apps like Monzo, Revolut, or Yolt to help you track expenses and avoid mid-term money shortages.

Organise Your Important Documents
Keep both digital and paper copies of essentials including your passport or driving licence, Student Finance letters, accommodation contract, UCAS offer confirmation, proof of qualifications, NHS number, and GP details. Having these to hand will save time if you need to provide proof for university admin or part-time job applications.

Pack Your Moving-In Essentials
Pack smart and check what your accommodation already provides. Bedding, kitchen basics, laundry supplies, and a few extension leads will be invaluable once you settle in. Think practical but also bring a few personal touches to make your space feel like home.

Get Ready for Freshers’ Week
Join your university’s Freshers’ Facebook groups to connect with flatmates and course mates before you arrive. Apply for an NUS Totum card to access student discounts. Keep an eye out for information on the societies fair, it’s one of the quickest ways to make friends and explore new interests. If you’re commuting, look into railcards or bus passes to cut down on travel costs.

Your Pre-Uni Launch Pad
Starting university is exciting, and a little planning now will save you a lot of stress later. Think of this summer as your “pre-uni launch pad.” Sort out the admin, pack your essentials, and you’ll be free to enjoy Freshers’ Week and focus on what really matters: making new friends, learning new things, and building your independence.
