Big changes are coming to UCL’s undergraduate admissions process from 2026. One of the most significant is the introduction of a brand-new reasoning assessment called the TARA test. This, along with other new subject-specific exams, will become essential parts of the application process for several popular degree programmes.

Introducing the TARA Test
The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a new general reasoning assessment that focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving and academic writing. Unlike subject-specific tests, TARA aims to assess a student’s ability to analyse, argue and write clearly, skills that are central to university success.
The test will be required for a wide range of courses, including:
– Computer Science
– Mathematical Computation
– Robotics and Artificial Intelligence
– Management Science
– European and International Social & Political Studies
– Social Sciences (with or without Data Science)
– Sociology
It will be delivered digitally through Pearson VUE, with test sessions available in October 2025 and January 2026. While this offers some scheduling flexibility, applicants are encouraged to begin preparing well in advance.
Other New UCL Admissions Tests for 2026
In addition to the TARA test, UCL is introducing two more admissions assessments for specific programmes.
Students applying for Electronic and Electrical Engineering will need to sit the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test). This test focuses on mathematical and scientific reasoning, and is designed to evaluate readiness for technical degree courses.
Meanwhile, the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) will now be required for those applying to Economics, including courses with a year abroad. TMUA has already been used by other leading UK universities and is intended to measure advanced mathematical thinking.

What’s Staying the Same
Not all programmes are affected by the new tests. Some longstanding admissions requirements will continue as before.
Applicants for Law will still need to take the LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test), and those applying for Medicine must sit the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test). These remain essential for entry into their respective fields and have not changed for 2026 entries.
