Ashbourne Medical School Programme

Offering students the best possible chance of gaining a medical school place at a top UK university for more than 35 years.

Ashbourne Medical School Programme

Getting into Medical School is not only about excellent academic achievement. Students need to be fully equipped to start a career in medicine, be up to speed with current medical issues, feel confident in interview, have some work experience and show a genuine and strong ambition to become a doctor. Medicine can be emotionally and physically demanding so learning how to interact with patients and manage extremely stressful and distressing situations is essential to becoming a successful doctor.

Amy Youngman, Head of Faculty for Natural Sciences, leads the Ashbourne Medical School Programme (ASMP) and has been successfully enabling students to apply for medical school for many years. Amy is a Medical School interviewer for UCL and is Head of Sixth Form at Ashbourne. She also teaches A Level Biology.

How the AMSP works

Medical School Programme

Comprehensive programme

Ashbourne Medical School Programme students take part in weekly workshops, get expert help to prepare for required UCAT test, receive individual support and guidance throughout the entire application process and sit mock interviews. The Programme offers students:

  • A thorough understanding of what a medical career will involve, including dentistry
  • A forum to discuss and debate current medical issues and ethics with other prospective medical school students
  • Opportunities to talk with practising doctors and Ashbourne alumni who are now at medical school
  • UCAT preparation
  • Interview preparation: both traditional and MMIs
  • UCAS support and guidance on all aspects of the application process from finding the right course and meeting all the requirements to writing a relevant and compelling personal statement and accepting an offer
  • Assistance in securing voluntary work experience placements
  • Supplementary support in Biology and Chemistry.

I honestly believe if I didn’t get all the one-to-one sessions with Amy where I had to target the BMAT to my specific situation I wouldn’t have done as well. You get such personal attention at Ashbourne which is what my favourite thing was about the whole Medical School Programme.

Amy explains how the programme works and describes how Ashbourne prepares and supports our students to make successful applications. Former Medical School Programme students also share their experiences and answer questions.

Excellent results

Ashbourne’s A level courses, taken in conjunction with the Medical School Programme, offer outstanding opportunities for ambitious and hardworking students who will benefit from the individual support and choice we offer to help our students reach the highest grades.

Our students consistently achieve outstanding results, 54% A*A (2022-2023), and students’ performance improvement is excellent, placing the college in the top 5% of UK schools and colleges for value added. Currently, almost 60% of our graduates go on to study at Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

What attracted me to Ashbourne was the small class sizes and how personal everything felt between you and your teacher. The Medical School Programme gave me the skills and tools I needed to go into the interview and to write a good personal statement.

— Lilian, Medicine at King's College London
