Year after year, after months of dedication and determination, Ashbourne students achieve exceptional A-level results. These outstanding achievements are the product of rigorous study, personalised support, and a shared ambition to excel. Our students’ perseverance, combined with the expertise of our teachers and the encouragement of our close-knit community, consistently places Ashbourne among the very best sixth form colleges in London.
As Ofsted observed in their 2024 report, “The school strives to, and succeeds in, ensuring that pupils achieve high academic results.” This is a testament to our unwavering commitment to helping every student reach their full potential, regardless of their starting point.
The 2024/25 academic year has once again highlighted our students’ ability to excel. With 49% of our students achieving A*A, significantly higher than the national average of just 28.2% (The Guardian). In individual subjects, our students did incredibly well with 59% A*A in Mathematics, 50% A*A in English Literature, and an astonishing 100% in Fine Art, and 75% in Textiles.
Behind these statistics are stories of remarkable personal achievement. Some students made dramatic leaps in performance, moving from E and D grades to strong Bs, from a U to an A* in Mathematics, and from an E to an A in Biology. One student even secured an extraordinary string of top grades, achieving A*A*A*A*A*A. These results are not simply a measure of academic ability; they are evidence of resilience, determination, and the transformational impact of exceptional teaching.
Ashbourne’s small classes and dedicated teaching approach ensure that every student receives exceptional individual attention, which can make a transformative difference to their academic performance. We actively encourage students to take advantage of additional support, including regular one-to-one meetings with teachers outside of class, subject-specific clinics, support classes, and peer group mentoring.
Ashbourne has a strong reputation for grade improvement. In the 2023/24 academic year, we ranked 64th out of 2,561 schools and colleges in England for A-level progress, placing us in the top 2.5% nationwide. This ranking is based on our government-published Value Added score of +0.47, which means that, on average, our students achieve nearly half a grade higher per subject than predicted from their GCSE results. For many, this progress is life-changing, unlocking access to leading universities, competitive degree courses, and career opportunities they may never have imagined possible.
This year’s success is part of a much bigger story. Over the past decade, Ashbourne students have consistently delivered results far above the national average, with 51% of all grades at A*A compared to the national figure of 31.3% (2019–2024, UK Government data). This consistency reflects the unique Ashbourne approach: small class sizes, individual attention, an unrelenting focus on academic excellence, and a culture that inspires students to aim high and achieve their ambitions.
