How We Support International Students
Moving to a new country for your studies is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. New people, a different education system, unfamiliar routines, it’s a lot to take in. That’s why choosing a sixth form college that understands and supports international students is so important.
At Ashbourne College, international students are a valued and vibrant part of the community. Whether English is your first language or not, whether you’ve lived in the UK before or are arriving for the first time, you’ll find support, structure, and people who truly want to help you succeed. Our cohort is formed of 40% international students and 60% home students.
A Welcoming Start
Arriving in a new place can be nerve-wracking. That’s why Ashbourne focuses on creating a warm, inclusive environment from day one. You’ll be welcomed by friendly staff and students, shown around the campus, and supported as you settle in. There’s no need to have everything figured out on your first day, everyone here understands that adjusting takes time.
The College is based in Kensington, one of London’s most exciting areas, but it’s not overwhelming or impersonal. You’ll meet people from all over the world, and you’ll quickly see that diversity is something we celebrate, not something that sets anyone apart. We take pride in our international community and every year we have our annual culture day where students are encouraged to wear clothing which would represent their culture.
Small Classes, Big Support
Our class sizes are small, usually under ten students. That means you’ll have the chance to speak, ask questions, and form a relationship with your teacher. If English isn’t your first language, or you’re unsure about a topic, there’s time and space to clarify things.
Teachers know your name, understand your background, and want to help you succeed. They’re ambitious but also human. You won’t be judged for needing help, in fact, asking for support is encouraged.
Even if in the beginning you still feel like you do not want to speak in class, you always approach your teachers outside the classroom. They are always happy to provide you with all the information which you are looking for.
Personal Tutors Who Know You
Each student is assigned a personal tutor who checks in regularly. This is especially helpful for international students. Your tutor will help you manage your studies, understand the UK academic system, and keep track of key deadlines. If you ever feel unsure about anything, academic or personal, your tutor is a trusted point of contact.
Many international students say this personal connection is one of the best parts of studying at Ashbourne. It’s part of our team mentality: you’re not expected to go it alone, you will be guided in every single step of the way.
Help with Language and Communication
If English is not your first language, there’s extra support available. We offer help with academic writing, presentation skills, and communication, all in a way that’s practical and encouraging. No one expects perfection; what matters is your willingness to improve and get involved.
A Pathway to University
Applying to UK universities through UCAS can seem confusing if you’ve never done it before. We provide detailed support with every stage of the application process. From choosing the right courses to writing a strong personal statement and preparing for interviews, you’ll be guided clearly and carefully.
Many international students from Ashbourne go on to top UK universities in fields like medicine, engineering, economics, and law. You’ll be supported to aim high and equipped to get there.
